Settings

All settings other than your vocal range, which is displayed under the My Range tab, can be accessed via the Settings tab.

Note Names
This settings determines how the notes are named on the Pitch Staff, the portion of the lessons that have the note bubbles. The available settings are:

  1. English: Uses note names C, D, E, F, G, A, B
  2. Solf├Ęge: Uses note names Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Si
    Note that this is a Fixed-Do notation, where each name always corresponds to the same note, as used by many non-English speaking countries around the world. If your country uses “Ti”, that is the same note as “Si”.
  3. Degree: Uses note names R, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7,…
    This is a moveable (non-fixed) notation where the note names move with the key. The actual number of available note names depend on the scale used. R corresponds to scale degree 1, i.e. the Root of the scale.

Auto-Scroll Pitch Staff
Once you get comfortable with the application, we highly recommend you turn on this feature, as it will eliminate the need for you to manually scroll the Pitch Staff (the section that has the note bubbles in a lesson) up or down as the lessons go through various keys. We’ve set the default to off, so that you get a better feel of the motion of the note bubbles as a lesson goes through various keys within your range when you first start.

Display Cue Chords
If you’d like to see what notes the app plays between key changes and before the notes you sing, simply enable this feature.

Note that on smaller devices, cue chords are only displayed in portrait orientation (i.e. on iPhone & iPod touch). When you turn on the display of cue chords, the first measure on the sheet music generally takes up more space, causing the whole page to be shrunk in order to fit your screen. If you would like to keep the displayed elements larger, you should keep this option disabled on smaller devices.

Restore Purchases
This button is only useful if you have purchased one or more add-ons. If you reinstall the app on the same device or another device, you can use this button to restore your previous purchases for free. Don’t worry, you won’t get charged again. After you restore, return to the Training tab to access your restored content.

  1. You know a setting I’d love? Headphone monitoring. Right now it’s a bit awkward using my in-ear headphones because I can’t hear myself. The iOS session programming guide says how to tell what audio hardware is being used including setting up callbacks for if it changes. Basically, I want a “headphone monitoring level” setting that echoes the audio input to the headphones when headphones are in use, but doesn’t do it otherwise. You can default it to 0%. I don’t know if the latency of the echoed signal would be low enough, but if it’s under 5 ms I would used this feature.

    1. Another customer had also requested this. I’ll check what latency we can achieve and if it’s reasonable, we’ll look into adding this feature.

    1. A bass staff is already available and is selected automatically when the user’s overall range is low. However it is not used if your range includes much higher notes as well, which may be the case for you. I’ll send you a direct email to get some info about your exact range.

      UPDATE: The latest version of the app now allows you to manually override the automatic Clef selection. Please update your copy for free from the App Store and see the Settings tab.

    1. Yes, definitely. To reset your history, simply delete the app and reinstall it from the App Store. To delete, press your finger on the app’s icon until it starts wiggling and then tap on the x in its corner. Make sure you use the same iTunes account you used the first time you downloaded the app so you don’t get charged again.

    1. Hi Geraldine, please make sure you’re not in the ear training section. While we provide male/female audio examples for all voice lessons, we don’t do the same for ear training exercises because you can use any sound to practice those. Any example audio would be identical to the piano sounds you already hear when you play those exercises. While you should use the sounds in the audio examples for voice lessons, if you’re unsure about what syllables to use for ear training, ‘ah’ would be a good sound to start with.

  2. I have to agree with the comment about the bass staff. There should be a way to choose the staff you see the notes on. I am tring to teach myself to sing tenor. I dont read music or play the piano. I was so excited to find your app. I bought it and the Ear tranning for singers. Without being able to see the notes in my range as they are written on the bass staff when i am doing the lessons this app doesnt really help me acomplish what i want to do. Very diappointed.

    1. Hi Gdub, because this is an unusual case, we don’t currently support manual selection (currently the app automatically selects the most suitable clef based on your range). However, we’ve already added the manual override request to our task list for our next release. But we also don’t like the idea of having a disappointed customer, so I’ll send you a direct email on Monday to see if we can get you this feature quicker than public release.

      UPDATE: This feature has now been added for everyone in version 1.3 of the app. See the Settings tab for manual clef override.

    1. Do you mean resetting your scores from your practice runs? We recommend keeping the results from all practice runs — the app consolidates them neatly after awhile. However, if you really would like to remove them, you can simply delete the app from your device and reinstall it from the App Store. Just make sure you use the same App Store account you initially used to purchase it, so you don’t end up paying again.

  3. The line graphs etc are not working when I do the exercises, both on the iPhone and the iPad. I have tried with and without earbuds that have a mic but it doesn’t seem to make a difference. I am thinking that it is not hearing my voice, but I am not sure how to fix this. Help please?

    1. A new feature in iOS7 is user permissions to use the microphone. I’m guessing you must have accidentally disallowed the app from using the mic when it first started under iOS7. Can you please check your permissions via the Settings app on your device? To do so, open the separate Settings app, select Privacy, then Microphone, and then make sure that the switch next to Erol Singer’s Studio is in the On position (green in the default theme).

  4. Does this app only use the internal microphone that is on the ipad or is it possible to use an external audio device ( for both input and monitoring )?
    I’ve been trying to use my roland duo-capture with a mic but I it has not been successful. I haven’t seen any information on setting up audio devices – it there any?

    1. Hi Mark,
      We recommend using the built-in microphone of your iPad, as the app is optimized for the frequency response of the built-in iPad/iPhone microphones. Instead of an external microphone, we highly recommend using an external pair of earphones for best results.

  5. Is there a way to monitor more than one user on the app? I have more than one child that would benefit from keeping a history log.

    1. Not at this time. We plan to add support for multiple users, and did a lot of the groundwork for it leading up to v2.0. However, due to time constraints, this feature didn’t make it into v2.0. We hope to add it sometime in the future.
